What is Pilates

Pilates is a form of exercise developed by German-born Joseph Pilates in the 1920’s. He primarily developed it to improve his own health and well-being and then went on to help many in the First World War. After the war he moved to America where he set up a studio, his clients were boxers, top ballet dancers, gymnasts and athletes.

By selecting the most effective features, Pilates was able to work out a system that had the perfect balance of strength and flexibility.

“My method develops the body uniformly, corrects the wrong posture, restores physical vitality, invigorates the mind and elevates the spirit”.-Joseph Pilates

Pilates targets the deep postural muscles and so works by building strength from inside out, rebalancing the body and bringing it into correct alignment. Your body will become longer, leaner and more toned. Your posture will improve, achieving the perfect balance between strength and flexibility. As Piates said, “Man is only as young as his spinal column.” It will help you to relax and concentrate, improve your breathing and co-ordination, and increase your stamina. Your body awareness is heightened by bringing together mind and body.

pilates-1Pilates is a low impact form of exercise with controlled precise movements. It can work for everyone including first time exercisers or those needing rehabilitation after injury. Yet it can still challenge the skills and stamina of elite athletes. Pilates is particularly safe for those with back problems, is medically approved and recommended by physiotherapists and osteopaths.
